Angry Birds and Empires & Allies this week’s gainer and loser among April’s Top 25 Facebook games

Each week, we take a look at six to seven games from the latest Top 25 Facebook Games and examine how their traffic has been doing since the list was posted, as well as how these changes might affect a title’s position on next month’s chart.

Here’s what we’ve looked at so far this month:

April 5, 2012: Pool Live Tour and CafĂ© World this week’s gainer and loser amongst April’s Top 25 Facebook games

This week, we take a look at No. 18 through No. 13 of the Top 25 Facebook Games in April.

Playtika’s Slotomania – Slot Machines is up  by 100,000 DAU to reach the 2 million mark. Casino games are increasing in popularity on Facebook, and the past few months have seen a rise of new slots titles. AppData shows Slotomania is still the most popular slots game on the social network — even though it’s one of the older ones — and it seems unlikely that it’ll start to lose traffic any time soon, but it may not move up more than a spot or two on next month’s chart because of the relatively minor traffic uptick.

Zynga’s Empires & Allies continues to lose traffic, dropping from 2.1 million DAU to 1.8 million over the past two weeks. The game was designed to appeal to mid-core strategy fans, but has had less success retaining players than Zynga’s “Ville” titles. Although Empires & Allies reached an impressive peak of 7.7 million DAU when it launched in June 2011 — thanks to cross promotion from other Zynga games like CityVille — traffic began bleeding out that August and has yet to recover. If Empires & Allies’s DAU continues to drop at this rate, it could be close to the bottom of our Top 25 for May.

Wooga’s Monster World is another title that continues to show slow-but-steady growth, up to 2.3 million DAU from 2.2 million at the start of the month. The game launched in April 2010 and consistently gained DAU since then. In March and April, Monster World showed slight declines in traffic, with the game dropping from No. 15 to No. 16, but this new increase may drive the game back up. The game has seen small bounces like this for extended periods before — last time, from November 2011 to the beginning of January 2012 — before beginning another time of growth. If that pattern holds true, Monster World will probably start to noticeably gain DAU again by the end of April or the beginning of May, but it may stay in the same spot for next month’s Top 25.

Wooga’s Bubble Island seems to be holding steady since the beginning of the month: After a slight drop, the game is back up to 2.3 million DAU.  As with other Wooga titles, Bubble Island’s traffic shows steady traffic gains ever since its January 2010 launch. The game dropped three spots to No. 15 this April because it lost 400,000 DAU, but this was following a dramatic traffic surge between January and March that saw a new DAU record of 2.8 million. This was likely due to increased Facebook advertising, and Bubble Island’s DAU gain was approximately six times higher than normal. Now that the ad push seems to be over, it looks like Bubble Island may have leveled out but probably won’t advance any higher on May’s Top 25 list because major DAU differences between games aren’t uncommon at this point on the chart.

Rovio’s Angry Birds is still attracting legions of fans on Facebook, having gained 800,000 DAU since April 1. The game launched in February and it has regularly topped our list of fastest-growing Facebook games since then. During March, Angry Birds went from 930,000 DAU to 2.6 million. Based on this month’s traffic patterns, the game looks like it might be able to double its DAU in time for May’s Top 25, but it’s a little too close to call. Angry Birds does look like it will at least make it to the No. 10 spot next month, since 3.6 million DAU was what Zynga Slingo needed to take that position for April.

Halfquest’s Arabic farm sim Happy Farm continues to creep up the Top 25 charts, moving from No. 13 in March to tying for the No. 12 spot in April. Since April 1, the game lost 100,000 DAU after nearly two weeks of no perceptible growth. Happy Farm showed consistent DAU gains since it launched in July 2011, but it lost a little traffic since its March 25 peak of 3 million DAU. The game gained 400,000 DAU in March, but April doesn’t look like it will see a repeat of this performance. Even if Happy Farm continues to lose DAU, the game may only fall one or two spots for the May Top 25, since it has over 500,000 more DAU than the next biggest games.

All data in this post comes from our traffic tracking service, AppData. Stay tuned for next week’s continuation of our Top 25 gainers and losers, when we look at No. 12 through No. 7 on the list.

Empires & Allies World Domination: Everything you need to know

A large new feature has launched in Empires & Allies this week, and according to Zynga, this might be the largest update the company has ever released in the game. The feature? World Domination! From now on, you'll have a new score at the top of your gameplay screen: your Domination Score. Every player will automatically have a starting score assigned to them, based on their level. This score relates to a Domination Rank, with the highest rank available being 100. However, even the most veteran players (that is, players at around Level 75) won't have a rank of 100 - the highest rank any one person can have to start is just 50, giving you room to grow.

The rank matters when it comes to unlocking new units, with new units being locked to particular Domination Ranks. How do you raise your rank? Well, by completing World Domination battles. In the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, you'll see an option to compete in World Domination battles in a similar way to starting the Battle Blitz process. You'll see a new menu, listing players and their Domination Ranks, and can assemble your own Defense Force using units that will not be destroyed when attacked by enemies.

Opponents are automatically displayed based on your Domination Rank, so you won't face someone who is extremely stronger than you, but you also can't "exploit" the system by attacking the "little guy." There is a slight variation in ranks, and attacking someone with a higher rank and winning will offer you more Domination Points and vice versa. The catch here is that you won't know what the Defense Force of your opponent is, so you'll need to have as strong an army as possible before attacking anyone.

If a player challenges you, they'll become your Rival and you'll earn extra Dominance Points when challenging them in the future. Similar to an old system in Mafia Wars, you can also flag a user on the game's Hit List, posting an item to your wall, allowing your friends to attack that particular player for bonus points as well. Of course, you'll likely receive some revenge attacks from that player as well, so plan your moves ahead before deciding to add someone to the Hit List.

This is an incredibly in-depth new feature in Empires & Allies, but the best way to learn how to handle it is to simply play the game. Good luck raising your Dominance Rank and earning some new units for your armies!

What do you think of this World Domination feature? Do you think another in-game score and leaderboard was really necessary? Sound off in the comments.

Empires & Allies Limited Edition Unit Factory: Everthing you need to know

If you've always wanted to fill your Empires & Allies armies with powerful limited edition units, but didn't want to spend the Empire Points on them (or, perhaps you just weren't a high enough level at the time to purchase them), you can now build the Limited Edition Unit Factory in your empire. Just to be clear, the name of the building is the "Limited Edition Unit Factory," the building itself isn't a limited edition item that you need to rush to have.
There are missions that go along with this building, and you'll complete the first by just placing the factory on your land. Your rewards for that mission are one Blue Approval Stamp and an Electrical Diagram. For the record, the second mission simply asks you to construct a unit within that new factory.

Once you've constructed the Factory (it takes just three energy to build), you'll be able to build one of four formerly limited edition units inside, with the help of friends (or, again, the option for purchasing them with Empire Points is available). While there are just four items available now, they are on a week-long time limit, meaning that a series of new items will be available to build after that week. You'll need to rush to finish them all in time. But just what are these items? Well, you can build a Commando (135 points), K7 Bomber (175 points), Elite Thumper Artillery (200 points) or a SU-122 Tank (200 points).

In the example of the Commando, you'd need to collect three Blue Approval Stamps and three Electrical Diagrams (the two items we received as mission rewards above), along with four each of Mechanical Diagrams and Red Approval Stamps. You'll earn these items by simply asking your friends to send them to you via a combination of general news posts and individual requests sent to friends.

Once complete, you'll have a fully functioning unit, and the same process can be completed (albeit by collecting some different materials) to build the other three units in the factory. Just remember - again - these items will only be available for a week at a time, so build the ones you want the most first, just in case you don't have a chance to come back to the rest before time runs out.

What do you think of this Limited Edition Unit Factory? Will you immediately start building units, or do you have all of the troops your empire needs right now? Sound off in the comments.

Empires & Allies: Play Adventure World, score a Red Vampire Jet

Adventure World Empires Allies promotionThe cross promotions for Adventure World, Zynga's brand new giant Facebook game from Zynga Boston, have officially exploded. After taking tours through both CityVille and Mafia Wars, Empires & Allies players can now score their own limited edition item, the Red Vampire Jet, for giving the new game a ride. All you need to do is long into E&A and click on an icon of a red plane on the right of your game screen.

Once you click this, click on the button to jump into Adventure World. You have until Oct. 6 to reach Level 6 in the massive game to score the item. Since the item won't be given to players until that date, we're unsure as to what it does. But our best guess is that it will be an aerial military unit. And it looks quite interesting with a very "seaplane" look to it.

Before the bevy of cross promotions, Adventure World wasn't doing so hot. But now, after diligent in-game advertisements like these, Zynga Boston's debut has reached over 29.5 million monthly players, and it looks to soon topple E&A, according to AppData. Oh, and the fact that the game will soon be thoroughly branded with Indiana Jones will certainly help that growth. Things are on the up and up for Adventure World, and the team already looks to capitalize on this critical mass.

Are you going to play Adventure World for this new item? What do you think of the cross promotions in Zynga's games overall? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

Empires & Allies: Embark on the Lucky Mermaid Mini-Campaign

Empires Allies Little MermaidIf there is one thing social gamers like--other than free stuff, of course--it's choices. It looks like Zynga has realized this in its recent games, and now Empires & Allies is taking on that mantra with the new Little Mermaid Mini-Campaign. While on paper, this is nothing more than a series of Goals, players are given a few choices on their path to the final reward: The Golden Mermaid.

Starting from the very beginning, you're given to choice to approach this new timed mini-campaign (about two weeks) in either combat-oriented or social or construction-centric missions. Frankly, the latter already sounds kind of boring, so I'd personally recommend taking the former path.

Each path consists of five Goals with one choice along the way. But Zynga reminds players to choose carefully, as there is no turning back after you make your first and second decisions along the way.

This mini-campaign appears in your game just as The Little Mermaid anchors on the coast of your empire, and clicking on it reveals a new campaign map with several Goals. According to the developer, these Goals have more lucrative rewards than standard ones, and the final prize--should you complete all five Goals on time--is The Golden Mermaid. This is certainly not a combat unit, but is a decoration said to grant players with booming profits.
Empires Allies Little Mermaid Campaign ScreenThis is a brand new approach to releasing content for the E&A team, and plans are to release more mini-campaigns like this one. So, of course, the team is looking for feedback on the forums. Here's a personal suggestion: Lose the social-centric missions and focus on the combat--perhaps even player vs player in Battle Blitz.

Social Empires Squeezes Past The Sims Social on This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by DAU

Social Point’s Social Empires squeezes past The Sims Social to claim the top spot on this week’s list of fastest-growing growing Facebook games by daily active users. Mystery Manor rounds out the top three.

Casino, card, and slot games still make up a healthy chunk of this list this week. JackpotJoy Slots drops off as of press time, but Slotomania, DoubleDown Casino, Texas HoldEm, and SlotSpot all turn up here as the genres expand and converge.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Mystery Manor on our weekly rankings of games by traffic. The hidden object game typically turned up behind Playdom’s competing title, Gardens of Time, but here we see it standing alone in the top three. Earlier this week, Mystery Manor’s recent growth spike pushed it into the top 10 on our fastest-growing games by monthly active user list. Gardens of Time, meanwhile, is experiencing a shallower growth spike.

All data in this post comes from our traffic tracking service, AppData. Stay tuned for our look at the top emerging apps on Friday.

Empires & Allies Special Forces Spectacular: Everything you need to know

If you're going for total military domination in Empires & Allies, you'll definitely want to check out the new Special Forces event that has launched in the game this afternoon. This release includes Spec Ops and Covert Ops units, including two versions of a Spectre Gunship with one being the strongest bomber ever released in the game.

Specifically, the Spectre Gunship has a strength of 175 points, while the Spectre Night Ops unit is one to behold, with, again, the highest strength in any bomber to date at 275 points.

If you're not into air units, but would rather have one that walks on two legs, you can also pick up some Commando units via two purchase options. This is the first limited edition soldier that's been released in the game so take note: a single Commando unit costs 15 Empire Points and comes with a strength of 135, while you can also choose spend more (75 Empire Points, to be exact) to unlock the ability to create more of these Commandos inside your Barracks, even after they've expired from the store. Of course, you'll also receive a free unit with that unlock purchase price.

All of these units will be available for the next 13 days, but they're not alone, as new decorative items have launched as well. These are the Helipad, which costs 10,000 coins each, and the Black Obelisk at 15,000 coins. They, again, come with the same time limit for expiring from the store.

According to Zynga, these won't be the only Spec Ops units released in the game, but the others might sneak up on us. Let the speculation begin!

Will you purchase either of these air units, or will you instead spend your Empire Points on creating an army of Commandos? Let us know in the comments.

Empires & Allies Defense Towers and Goals: Everything you need to know

Empires Allies Defense TowerEmpires & Allies, Zynga's flagship strategy Facebook game, just got exponentially more purple. Defense Towers have been released to the game, which allow players to defend specific buildings within a small radius from invasion. More importantly, however, players can attack their friends while Defense Towers are active, though they require a special resource to remain active, Zipp Energy Drinks.

Defense Towers are introduced through a series of Goals, but players are simply given their first Defense Tower through a pop-up that appears. Here's everything you need to know about the Defense Tower and its Goals:

The Best Defense Place the Defense TowerComplete the Defense Tower
Place the Tower near buildings you'd like to be protected when the pop-up appears. After whacking the foundation three times, another pop-up will appear, displaying the following items you'll need to amass in order to finish the structure: 4 Cement4 Nails4 Table Saw4 Nail GunDefense Tower 1 Build MenuOf course, all of these items must be sourced through your loyal, helpful friends. The impatient will be happy to hear that they can buy their way out of these requirements, too. Once it's complete, you will also need to staff it with a few friends. Your reward for completing this Goal is 500 Coins and a Zipp Energy Drink, which will come in handy later.

Fire It Up

This incredibly simple Goal asks you to just click on the Defense Tower and choose "Activate." However, the building can only be activated if you feed it with Energy Drinks and must be continually fed them if you want it to remain active. This Goal rewards players with a measly 100 Coins.

Free Reign With Defense Tower Active, Invade a Neighboring EmpireCollect 1 Black Heart
Defene TowerThis Goal is simply to show you that it is, in fact, possible to attack your friends while defending your vital buildings. This Goal's reward ups the ante quite a bit with double the previous reward ... 200 Coins.

So Sleepy

The final Goal in this painfully simple series tasks you with asking your friends for another Zipp Energy Drink, which is more than likely done through either the Goal menu or one within the Defense Tower.

Completing this Goal nets you a whopping 500 Coins. Man, I have no idea where you're gonna' spend all that hard-earned dough.

Empires & Allies Cheats & Tips: Rename your Empire in a flash

by Brandy Shaul, Posted Aug 11th 2011 10:20PM

While Zynga's Empires & Allies has always allowed us to name our Empires upon starting the game, we've received plenty of questions from players that wanted to change the name of their Empires, but weren't sure how to do so. Truth be told, we weren't even allowed to rename our empires until just this week, but while we mentioned this new option in passing when bringing you a look at the new Quest Manager, here's a complete look at actually changing your Empire's name.

First, you'll know that this renaming feature has rolled around to you when you hover over your Empire's name and it highlights in gold.

Click on your Empire's name and a new window will appear where you'll have the ability to enter a new name for your Empire, up to 23 characters in length. If you change your mind and choose not to rename your city, just leave the name as-is and hit Save (or Save and Share if you want to share some free goodies with your friends). If you do decide to change your Empire's name, make sure you have the spelling and capitalization the way you want and hit Save to see the name officially change in your game.

Altogether, it seems like Zynga has simply triggered the re-launch of the first naming window from the very beginning of gameplay, as we're told "congratulations," which doesn't make much sense. Then again, if we're allowed to rename our Empires because of this re-launch (when we should have ultimately been allowed to rename our Empires since the beginning), I suppose I can't complain about some odd wording.

Now go forth soldiers, and rename your Empires to something epic!

Check out the rest of our Empires & Allies Cheats and Tips right here. -->

Have you been waiting for the ability to rename your Empire in Empires & Allies, or are you fine with its name the way it is? Sound off in the comments.

Climb to the top in Empires & Allies Leaderboards

Empires & Allies LeaderboardsThe competition just got that much more fierce in Empires & Allies. Zynga has finally released Leaderboards to the game. (You know that trophy icon that's been in the game since launch? It works now!) Clicking on the new Leaderboards feature opens up a window with lots of numbers, pictures and three tabs: Campaign Progress, Ore Investment and Damage Dash.

Campaign Progress is a standard leaderboard that simply compares your own progress in the game's storyline battles with that of your friends. Ore Investment and Damage Dash, however, are have an expiration date, and will reward players with prizes for placing each time the leaderboard closes.

Ore Investment tracks how much Ore players spend within a certain time--spend the most to climb to the top and win. As for Damage Dash, players will compete to deal the most damage across both invasions and campaign battles within the time period.

Damage DashPlayers will receive what Zynga calls "milestone prizes" for reaching certain, well, milestones in their progress each week. For example, say you deal 100,000 damage in combat during the eight-day period. That's worth a Rafale Fighter this week--an item that costs Empire Points normally, and is no longer available.

But Trophies are for the true winners, as the top three contestants in both the Ore Investment and Damage Dash leaderboards will receive Trophies for bragging rights. Zynga says this is the first of many different Leaderboards, so go on and get yourself acquainted ... with getting owned.

Zynga's Empires & Allies conquers FarmVille in just under a month

Empires & AlliesIs FarmVille on its way out? Not even close, but the game is losing its luster ... at least compared to the new Zynga hotness: Empires & Allies. The strategy combat game has reached 41 million players in just 25 days, which defeats FarmVille's 38 million monthly players, according to AppData. Of course, this is the second time a new Zynga game has ousted FarmVille, the first being none other than CityVille.

And that game holds 90 million monthly players. We've already touched on why this game has grown just as, if not more, quickly than Zynga's own hit games, but it again boils down to Zynga leveraging its own fan base.

It's a shame to say for the others out there, but Zynga is kinda competing with itself at this point. And until a competitor reaches that caliber of traffic, that's how it will be. (Can the speculation end now?)

And the quality of Zynga's games is only improving, and the company is slowly moving onto mobile with the recent original games for iOS: Hanging with Friends and CityVille Hometown (soon to be released). If E&A keeps going at this rate, where will it stop? Could it perhaps even surpass CityVille's peak of 100 million players. Give it another month and we'll see.

Empires & Allies on Growth Offensive for Zynga Ahead of Reported IPO

Empires & Allies is setting a strong pace in its fourth week after launch. While its monthly active user and daily active user growth numbers are so far coming in below where Zynga’s last big launch on Facebook was – CityVille, back in December — it is the clear leader in the strategy genre of social game.

By the traffic numbers in our AppData tracking service, it’s already the third-largest game on Facebook by MAU with 37.7 million, and with 6.73 million DAU about to pass Texas Hold’Em to reach third by that metric, and still growing. These users are in turn boosting Zynga’s undeduplicated Facebook traffic numbers to 54.8 million DAU and 269.2 million MAU.

The context here is that some people have questioned Zynga’s ability to keep producing hits on Facebook as development and marketing costs go up. The company is occasionally lumped together with other newly successful technology startups as an example of an internet bubble, especially given reports that Zynga is looking to public in the next couple of the months.

E3 2011: Playdom's City of Might goes to war with Zynga's Empires & Allies this summer

by Brandy Shaul, Posted Jun 10th 2011 1:36AM

Don't they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? I hope Zynga will feel mighty flattered then, as Playdom unveiled a new Facebook game at E3 this year - City of Might. During my limited demo of the game (I wasn't actually allowed to play, but rather was shown a scripted series of events), I learned that City of Might combines the city-building elements of City of Wonder with resource management and player-vs-player combat. Instantly, we're left with comparisons to Zynga's Empires & Allies which just launched days ago.

For City of Might, you'll need to collect resources to build more units, and can then use those units to plan and execute invasion strategies on other players. While combat is a bit interactive, it's mostly cinematic, and you'll only be able to place your units on the enemies' maps and then add more units mid-battle if your troops wind up defeated. From what I saw, it appeared that the rest of battle was automated, as each side shows their damage as small numbers that float rapidly up from the unit or building in question. If you don't succeed your first time in battle, you can call in the help of friends for a rematch. These friends will allow you to earn bonuses to your damage and armor stats, giving you a better chance at success. There are air and ground units to choose from, but this demo didn't make it clear as to whether naval units would complete the expected trio.

Where City of Might looks to have a one-up on Zynga is through the use of an in-game chat system, allowing you to interact in real time with other players, whether they are your Facebook friends or not. In this way, you won't have to have tons of personal friends playing the game on Facebook to actually play the game with other real people.

As for an expected launch, we can look to see City of Might drop its first bomb on Facebook later this summer. We know there are many more features still being completed that will eventually be added to the game, but details are heavily under wraps as of right now. You can see a small preview of what the game looks like at the top of this post, but we'll make sure to give you a more in-depth overview of the game as we get closer to launch.

What do you think of the idea of Playdom's City of Might? Do you think anything could have the power to defeat Zynga? Let us know in the comments.

Tonight's FarmVille update sees the release of two new buildings and four decorative items in the current Ireland limited edition item theme. This update's an unusual one, though, as two of the items are available under a limited time "sale." Remember, this isn't the first time Zynga has released new items and placed them immediately on sale, so you'll know that you're actually getting a bargain with these two items if you do decide to splurge.

The European Robins is a pair of decorative birds for 9 Farm Cash, while the Irish Library is a large building that costs only 18 Farm Cash. Currently, there isn't any marking letting us know when these sale prices will expire, so plan ahead if you have any interest in them whatsoever.

Meet us behind the break for a look at the other four items released this evening.

Tonight's FarmVille update brought with it two (technically three) new animals in the Connemara Pony and Irish Hare. Our prediction about the cost of the Connemara Pony has been proven correct, as it is now available for 24 Farm Cash. Remember, by purchasing one of these Ponies and placing it in your Horse Stable with a Stallion (ether wandering or permanent) you'll have a chance of breeding the Connemara Pony Foal that can be shared with friends. Even for a gray Pony, it's foal would still have to be cute, right?

Meanwhile, the Irish Hare is still a bit expensive, at 12 Farm Cash each. Will we ever see a day when new limited edition animals no longer solely cost Farm Cash? I doubt it, but we'll make sure to scream to the four corners (in excitement of course) if that day ever comes.

What do you think of these new Ireland-themed animals? Will you add the Connemara Pony to your collection in the game, or are you more interested in earning the foal from friends? Let us know in the comments.

Two new trees have hit the FarmVille marketplace this evening, both in the new Ireland item theme. The two trees are the Boom Tree and the Gorse Tree. Interesting names, right? The Gorse Tree costs 5 Farm Cash, while the Boom Tree is the level two option, meaning it costs more at 10 Farm Cash.

Remember, as usual, you don't have to buy both trees from the store, and can actually skip the Boom Tree altogether if you're a tree farmer, as you'll be able to earn a Boom Tree (eventually, yet randomly) as a Mystery Seedling from your Gorse Trees, or from those seedlings posted by your friends on their walls.

If you do plan to purchase these trees, you have just two weeks to do so, before they'll disappear, potentially not to be seen again.

What do you think of these two interestingly named trees? Which is your favorite, or will you buy both? Let us know in the comments.

A new goal has launched in FarmVille's English Countryside this evening, and it sees Agatha looking to replicate the lovely flower gardens she's seen in the past on your own farm. This goal, as you might have guessed, asks you to plant flowers - three different flowers, to be exact.

Harvest 50 Spring Squill
Harvest 50 Bluebells
Harvest 50 Cornflower

All told, this isn't a lot of crops, and you can easily split your progress into different days, if you don't want to dedicate 150 plots to the goal all at once. Bluebells cost 120 coins and take 12 hours to grow, Cornflower costs 90 coins and takes 16 hours to grow, and finally, Spring Squill is another 12-hour crop, costing 140 coins per square. For finishing this goal, you'll receive four Spring Flowerbeds, 200 XP and 2,500 coins.

While this goal doesn't actually move us any farther along on the English Countryside map, it does give us something to work on in the meantime, so I suppose we can't really complain.

Have you started this English Countryside goal yet, or are you still a few buildings behind in terms of overall progress? Let us know what think of this quest and its rewards in the comments.

With any city-builder comes a constant battle for space, and even though Zynga's newest Facebook game Empires & Allies is about far more than the city-building portions, you'll still spend the majority of your time back on your Home Island(s) creating new military units, refining oil, processing wood and so on. You'll need space to build more and more buildings as you level up, and you'll eventually need to expand your land.

Players of CityVille will recognize the system here. Currently, your very first expansion comes at a price of 5,000 coins and 10 Liberty Bonds. Liberty Bonds are the equivalent of CityVille's Zoning Permits, and you'll need to collect them from friends in mass quantities to expand each and every time you do so. There's a catch here though. Whether by some oversight or intentional design choice, you can't currently ask for Liberty Bonds via the game's expansion menu (found in the game's store - the Hard Hat icon). Only when you've earned enough coins to purchase the expansion will you be able to ask for Liberty Bonds, forcing you to wait quite a while instead of accomplishing two tasks at once.

Either way, you can work around this and expand early, if you put your mind to it. Participate in battles frequently, and you'll receive Liberty Bonds as prizes. Furthermore, Liberty Bonds are currently available to send via the game's free gifts page, so your friends can send you as many (or as few, if you don't remind them) as they'd like.

With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) now less than a week away, EA Interactive has given social and casual gamers alike a look at their E3 lineup, sans a few surprises that will revealed at the show. EA Mobile, Chillingo and Playfish will all share a space at this year's event, with the lineup revealing one particular game that Pet Society lovers will melt for.

Pet Society Vacation, while lacking in details, will be coming to iPhone and iPod Touch sometime (presumably) this year. Will this be a completely separate game from Pet Society on Facebook, or will it be like Social City or FarmVille on iOS, letting users interact with their furry pals, friends' pets, and even shop in the game's many stores on the go, only to have that information sync back to Facebook? We'll make sure to let you know what is revealed at E3 proper, so stay tuned.

For the complete lineup of EA Mobile, Chillingo and Playfish games to be shown at E3, meet us behind the break.

risk factions on facebook

While Zynga has launched a Empires & Allies, which is best described at Risk meets CityVille, competitor Playfish is hard at work on a new game called Risk Factions on Facebook.

Playfish's parent company EA made a game called Risk: Factions for Xbox Live in 2010, and it's likely that this is just a Facebook rendition of the same game. If you go to the game's Facebook fan page, you can give up your email to get a chance to take part in the game's beta.

Empires & Allies Land Expansions: Everything you need to know

by Brandy Shaul, Posted Jun 1st 2011 9:45PM

Regardless of how you come across your Liberty Bonds, you'll go about actually adding the expansion to your land in the same way. Simply purchase the expansion from the store and then choose the area that you'd like to expand. Unfortunately, this is another system carried over from CityVille, as your entire city won't gain expanded limits; rather, you'll have to pick and choose where to add more land.

You'll want to plan your expansions ahead of time, as they cost more and more coins each time that you purchase a single lot of land. For example, after you've purchased the first land expansion for 5,000 coins, the second expansion doesn't come until you've reached 6,000 coins, and have collected another 10 Liberty Bonds.

It's a lengthy process, sure, but it's nothing we can't overcome, so long as Liberty Bonds stay readily available. If not, then we may really have a war on our hands.

Check out the rest of our Empires & Allies Cheats & Tips right here.

What do you think of Empires & Allies' expansion process? Should the game have stuck to a FarmVille or FrontierVille system, where your initial square simply becomes larger, or do you like picking where each chunk of new land should go? Sound off in the comments.

Empires & Allies Neighbor Invasions: Everything you need to know

by Joe Osborne, Posted Jun 2nd 2011 10:45AM

Empires & Allies Friend BattlesFarmVille, FrontierVille and CityVille are all about red hearts, sunshine and friendship. But Empires & Allies asks, "What about beating friends to a bloody pulp?" Finally, instead of helping our friends we can hurt them just as easily. Welcome to Neighbor Invasions. This is your chance to finally be the bad guy for once, and we have a full guide on how to be the biggest, baddest Neighbor around.
Invasion BoundBefore we get into mechanics, just make sure you're at least Level 6 before trying this out. When you reach Level 6 (and if you've followed all the Goals until this point), you will be tasked with a Goal titled "Invasion Bound." This is where the good stuff, the meat and potatoes if you will, of Empires & Allies lies. Choosing a locationLaying the Beat Down (Attacking):

To invade one of your friends Empires, just click on their name in your Neighbor Bar, click "Invade," and once you arrive at their Empire, choose a location to attack. The location of attack is important for two reasons: 1. the structures you attack directly effect your rewards like resources and coins--choose depending on your needs, and 2. some areas on your friend's map might be better-defended than others, so take advantage of that.

Victorious InvasionThen, like normal combat, you must choose your method of attack from Air, Naval or Infantry options and then specific units to combat your enemy's. Pro Tip: Try zooming in on your Neighbor's map before choosing an attack location. This way, you can see which units they have defending which structures, and better prepare an attack based on your own arsenal. But back to the combat screen. Once you've (hopefully) defeated your opponent by choosing appropriate units and making smart attack choices, you will be declared the winner. Bask in VictoryNow, you have the option to both post the news to Facebook and send a 100-character taunt to your battered buddy. After you reap the rewards from your friend's Empire, which again depend on where exactly you invaded, your time in your friend's Empire is through. Well, at least for a day. You should also keep in mind that either helping or hurting a friend rewards you with Honor or Infamy, respectively, but also you cannot do both to a single friend in one day. Defending your EmpirePutting up the Gloves (Defending):

Don't worry, you do have the option to fight back when invaded. The process for defending your Empire is nearly identical, but the rewards are far more lucrative for a successful defense. Though, you won't exactly be prepared for what troops they've chosen, so it's best to create a large, varied force of units to defend yourself with. If you fail to defend yourself from an invasion, that player will be able to collect rewards from that invaded location every few hours until you do, so bite them back.

Reap the RewardsGettin' to the Good Stuff (Losses and Rewards):

While you will receive bonuses for successfully attacking a friend, you will not lose anything for being invaded by a friend from the locations they attack. In other words, those rewards aren't stolen, but created out of thin air. (Ah, technology.) The same goes for rewards collected by invaded, undefended Empires. However, there is one thing to lose while in combat: units. Losing a Tank or a squad of Infantry in battle means that you will not be able to bring them onto the battlefield again. Therefore, it's a good idea to keep building units and maintain a nice balance of Air, Naval and Infantry units.

If you want protection from invasion while you, say, sleep or go for a good old vacay, you can opt to go neutral for a minimum of 18 hours, which will prevent players from invading your Empire. However, going neutral will erase your current occupations and you'll have to start all over. But hey, there's no need to be a wuss--this is Empires & Allies, and staking your claim is half the battle.

Check out the rest of our Empires & Allies Cheats & Tips right here.

Zynga's Empires & Allies: Complete Guide to the first 10 Missions

Atten-TION privates! Zynga's Empires & Allies is now live on Facebook, and there's a war to be won! We've gone right to work in the social giant's newest title to bring you a complete guide to how to get started completing missions in this Risk-inspired battle for the ages! While there are plenty of activities for you to take part in throughout the game - producing wood and oil to create homes and military units, battling in full-screen combat against cleverly named villains, and bringing your destroyed island nation back to life (just to name a few) - one of the biggest time-sinks in the game will be the completing of missions.

Want to see what to expect from the game's first ten missions? Meet us behind the break to start on your road to domination!

To be clear, this guide starts after you've completed the basic tutorial (which sees Zynga guiding you step-by-step with no room for error). At this point, you'll already have a Barracks on your land, and will have trained some Cadet Soldiers. You will have also engaged in your first battle, learning the basics of combat (which can be found repeated at the bottom of this post). At the end of the tutorial, you start Episode 2: Rallying the Empire. You're on your own cadet - it's time to make a name for yourself.

Mission 1: At the Ready!

Deploy Cadet Soldiers on the Island

If you've been going through the game in a linear fashion, you will have just completed the tutorial, and will likely need to wait a matter of 3-4 minutes for your first Barracks to finish training your Cadet Soldiers. Once that's done, simply click on your Barracks when the symbol of the Cadet is floating above it to pull the soldiers from the Barracks. You can then place them anywhere on your map to finish this quest, being rewarded with 50 Wood in the process.

Mission 2: Empire Spirit

Place the Empire Flag from your Inventory

This mission is just as easy as the first, and it introduces you to your in-game inventory. The inventory is represented by the three crates in the bottom right menu of the game screen. Currently, since you're just starting the game, the only decoration in your inventory will be this Flagpole, so you can simply click on the "Select" button and then place the flag anywhere you'd like in your town. You'll receive a one experience point bonus for placing the flag, which will also allow you to name your new Empire. You have 23 characters to work with for a full name, so be creative!

Mission 3: Rebuilding Hope

Build two additional Small Island Huts

Your island starts with two Small Island Huts (a type of home, similar to those in CityVille), but you'll need to raise the population even further by adding two more. Each Hut can be purchased from the game's store (the Hard Hat icon in the lower right of the screen) for 10 Wood each. Don't worry about not having a Wood meter at the top of your screen just yet - it will be activated very shortly. For now, just know that you do have the 20 Wood necessary, and build away!

Each Small Island Hut must be constructed by whacking the frame three times. Each whack costs one energy point, as you'd expect from other Zynga games. Once you have built both Huts, your population will increase to 40/100, and you'll receive 200 coins for finishing this mission.

Mission 4: Feed the Troops!

Build a Farm
Plant Corn

Farms work as you'd expect in Empires & Allies - as a way to earn additional coins. There's no Food meter in the game, but you'll need the profits from these crops to buy additional military units, purchase new homes for your citizens and so on. However, instead of simply plowing land, Farms are an actual building type, found under the "Industry" tab of the game's store.

Each Farm costs 10 Wood to build. By this point, you will have a Wood meter on your screen, so you'll be able to easily tell if you have the Wood on hand. If you're following these goals linearly, you'll have at least 210 Wood on hand, so start building that Farm! Farms also take three whacks to construct, and once that's done, you can start growing Corn, which costs just 25 coins to plant and is ready in five minutes. For simply planting Corn in a single Farm, you'll finish this mission and will earn 150 coins.

Mission 5: Harvest Time

Harvest Corn

As you'd expect, this mission simply asks you to harvest the Corn that you just planted. Just wait for the Corn to visibly change to full grown in the Farm (and for the Money Bag to start floating above the Farm) before you attempt to harvest the crop. If you click on the Farm before this point, you'll be shown a new menu, that will let you delete the current growing crop or ask your friends for help in speeding up its growth. You can also use Empire Points to instantly grow whatever crop you're growing, but for this first mission, just letting things run their natural course is the best plan.

Finishing this mission will give you 75 coins and one experience point for actually harvesting the Corn, along with 50 Wood as a bonus.

Mission 6: The Voice of the People

Construct a new Parliament Building

This particular mission introduces you to the concept of population growth and "government buildings," as seen in CityVille. As we said before, each home you add to your town adds a specific number of citizens to your overall population. These government (community) buildings act as a way to increase your total possible population.

The Parliament building in particular is available from the Government section of the store for 1,000 coins and 100 Wood. If you've been following our guide, you'll have over 5,800 coins and 250 Wood to spare, so you really won't feel the pinch on the wallet with this one (thank goodness). The base of the Parliament is the largest one you will have come across yet, but still only takes three whacks to complete. From there, things become very reminiscent to CityVille, as you'll need to hire three staff members to work in your Parliament before construction is actually complete.

Just click on the "Hire Friends" button to send out individual requests to those friends that have also joined in Zynga's newest game so that you can finish sooner, rather than later. Once completed, your island's maximum population will increase by 100. Your reward is 2,000 coins.

Mission 7: Cannon Building

Build an Additional Barracks
Construct 2 Cannon Artillery

For this mission, you'll be introduced to the creation of new military units. You'll need to buy a new Barracks from the store for 200 coins and 20 Wood (Barracks are found under the Military tab). As you might have expected, this building too requires three whacks to construct. Once it's done, you'll be able to click on the Barracks to see a menu like the one below, where you can choose which type of military unit you'd like to create.

For the purposes of our mission, choose the Cannon Artillery in the top right corner. This unit costs 200 coins to create, and it will take five minutes to complete. For finishing this mission (even if you don't actually wait the five minutes for them to be created), you'll receive 200 coins.

Mission 8: Morale Boost!

Build two additional Farms
Harvest 2 Watermelons

War is tough, and it makes the strongest of men pretty hungry. To boost your soldiers' spirits, you'll need to build two Farms in addition to the one you built earlier, and you'll need to grow Watermelons in these new farms. Each patch of Watermelons costs 240 coins and takes four hours to grow.

For finishing this mission, you'll receive 200 coins.

Mission 9: Recon Mission

Switch to Full Screen Mode
Zoom Out to see your outer islands
Zoom in to Default View

This mission is an incredibly simple one, lasting just seconds. You'll be introduced to some neat aspects of the game's presentation and user interface, and will be able to activate full screen mode, or zoom your view in and out by clicking on the appropriate buttons in the orange vertical menu that runs along the right side of the screen. Acclimate yourself with these three buttons, and you'll receive 150 coins and 50 Wood.

Mission 10: Tank in the Woods

Repel the Attacking Tank

Here we go soldiers - our first battle since the tutorial battle at the beginning of the game. This time, you'll learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of your combat types by running head-first into a battle with a Tank!

Battle opportunities like this one will appear as red-shaded regions on your land. Click on the enemy skull picture and then click on "Attack" to engage the enemy. This particular battle sees you going up against a single Tank with 50 hit points. Each single type of military unit in the game has pros and cons; that is, units they would be stronger or weaker against. For the Tank, your Cannon Artillery are given the combat boost, so you'd want to click on the Cannon Artillery as seen below to activate it as your current active solider.

From there, just click on the Tank to attack it. You'll need to click repeatedly, each time your cursor turns into a red cross-hair, until the Tank's hit points have been depleted and you've won the battle. Remember to pick up the bonus items that appear as you attack, which will go to fill the bonus bar at the top of the screen, giving you extra coins a la CityVille or FrontierVille.

Combat may seem hectic or confusing at first, but the main thing to keep in mind is that matching the symbols found next to your enemies' health bars to the symbols under "Great Against" for your own troops ensures the most damage possible per attack (increasing your chance of winning each battle significantly). Defeating this Tank gives you 50 Wood.

At this point, you'll also receive your first piece of intelligence about the Dark Alliance army - a man called "The Raven" has recruited the most vile warlords form the whole world to attack your small island. There's no explanation as to what you did to make him so mad, but you know that you must rebuild and prepare before he can strike again!

And there you have it - a complete look at the first ten missions of Zynga's Empires & Allies on Facebook, a game that isn't just for social or casual players, but can truly cross the line to the hardcore (give the game a few minutes of your time and you'll see what we mean). There's plenty more where that came from, so won't you join us in waging this war against the Dark Alliance? We can use all of the allies we can get!
