Mario and Luigi: Dream Team 3DS XL Bundle Hits Stores

Nintendo has dedicated 2013 to the "forgotten" Mario brother, Luigi Mario, not only with his fair share of game releases, like Mario and Luigi: Dream Team and New Super Luigi U, but also with a number of promotions. Today, the company marked its latest one, releasing a special limited edition 3DS XL bundle which features him alongside his more famous sibling, Mario.
The Mario and Luigi: Dream Team bundle is available in stores now, going for $199.99 and featuring a silver 3DS XL system with the two brothers on the front, and a pre-installed copy of the hit role-playing action/adventure Mario and Luigi: Dream Team.
Nintendo has been no stranger to releasing bundles this year, as the company unveiled special 3DS XL packages featuring Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, as well as Pokemon X & Y oriented systems. Why are you not creating your dream game?

Are you creating your dream game? The game you’ve always wanted to create?

If not… why not?

I asked about these earlier in twitter and got some replies & sparked some discussion. Here’s some more points regarding this issue:

If visuals/sounds is the problem, why not use existing games and mod them?
For example, Skyrim, Crysis, Source games, upcoming Source 2 (or whatever it’s called)… There’s plenty of game engines that can be used for modding?

Needs more design? Why not more prototyping?
I also heard about reasons saying that game requires more planning or designing first. Why not take 2 weeks to design, and then participate in some weekend prototyping jam & knock the game basics together?

One of the most fun way to get some very fun stuff out is prototyping. I knocked my dwarves prototype together in a week, sold 22 copies (that’s $22!), and it was one of the most rewarding experiences.

I prototyped the core. It would be easy to continue from there if I’d want.

Too big scope or takes too much time
One of the biggest issues I’ve had with my card game development is that, it started as a small game. It went through 3 very huge revisions. Each version was almost totally different. The current final version I have, is totally different than what the game was when I started.

Sure, this is taking “too long”… but they always do. I’m setting my first public release for 12/12/12. At that point I aim to get the first version out, and I do my best effort to finalize the game during these 30 days.

This started as a small project. In a way it still is – it’s the game mechanisms that took most of my time anyway – and has taken a long time.

And the real answer is:
- So what if scope is too big? Either scale down features or just take more time. If you need art assets, then well, mod some existing game. Or make minecraft like graphics.
- DLC. Patching. There’s a reason why those exist. So that we don’t need to put all our ideas in the first version. Sure, I’d like to have 30 different characters in the game, but I just stick with dozen. Why? Because I can add 20 card character pack later if I want. Similarly your cool shooter game doesn’t need 902 weapons in the beginning. Just throw in 4 for the first release and add more later in a patches.

Narrow down scope, get rid of useless features or minor features. Keep the big important features there. And go further. Put less important stuff in your “maybe later” box.

Dream game needs to be 5 year long project
Developing game long doesn’t guarantee it’s better than if development takes short time.

Split schedule into smaller releases.

Rather than doing “one big dream game project”. Do “series of smaller dream game sub projects that all help create the one big dream game project”. Why? Because it’s in every single way the much more rewarding way to do it.

Are you making up excuses?
It’s easy to come up with excuses. “Need more this or that, then I could do it”.

There are limitations. And if you don’t happen to get some sort of funding, you probably have to be bit more creative to figure out how to get development done.

If visual assets is the problem, then you must think whether art is important. Could you replace it with something easier? Could you mod some existing game?

If it “needs more design”, then start prototyping. Prototyping can quickly reveal issues in design. Get others to play your prototypes. Often. Prototypes can be as simple as pen & paper.

Your might need to reduce your project scope in some aspects, but if you think of “what is the experience my game will offer to players”, you will soon realize that certain “must to have” features we think there should be… aren’t so “must to have” after all.

So, how about that.

Now all you need to find is that old VHS tape of Disney's Aladdin--don't lie, you know you own one. It's Arabian Nights week in The Sims Social, and Playfish has introduced quite the quest for players to complete, "I Dream of Genies." (Man, this week's theme is pop culture reference gold, huh?)

Those who complete the quest within seven days will earn their very own Desert Treasure, but it won't be a walk in the park. Players will need 12 Relaxation, 18 Love, a Music Skill Item, 400 Social Points, 4,600 Simoleons and at least 10 friends to complete "I Dream of Genies." Without further delay, here's how to finish the quest fast:

I Dream of Genies Part 1 Ask 6 Sims if They've Heard of Johnny or Jenny Run 9 Purple Items to Find Genies Become Inspired
First, visit six friends' Sims, click on them and choose the "Heard of Jenny or Johnny or Something" option. While you're there, click on their purple items and choose the "Rub Rub" option to fulfill the second task. This can also be done at your Sim's home. To become Inspired, simply fulfill all of your Sim's needs, which is easier to do last since your Social meter will be filled. I Dream of Genies Part 2 Spend 3,000 Simoleons on Arabian Nights Furniture Have 12 Relaxation Play Brain Training Games on Computer for Two Days
The simplest way to spend 3,000 Simoleons on this week's furniture is to buy the Oasis Passion and Oasis Meditate Thrones, both of which go for 1,500 Simoleons. Relaxation comes from watching TV, listening to stereos, etc. The final task requires players to click on the computer in their homes and choose the "Play Brain Training" option two days consecutively. The in-game clock resets at midnight GMT.

I Dream of Genies Part 3 Earn 500 Simoleons from Athletic Skills Buy one item of Arabian Nights Clothing Harvest 6 Grapes
The best way to earn Simoleons performing Athletic Skills is to use either the Treadmill or Yoga Mat. The cheapest piece of Arabian Nights Clothing is Ali's Mint Turban for 1,600 Simoleons. Harvesting six Grapes will cost a total of 138 Simoleons and take at least two days.

I Dream of Genies Part 4 Earn 600 Simoleons from Music Skills Charm a Snake Say 'Echo! Echo!' to 10 Sims
The easiest way to earn 600 Simoleons from a Music Item is to simply use the Guitar that comes with your house. To charm a Snake, visit Bella's house, click on her Snake Charming Kit and use the "Charm Snake" option. Finally, visit 10 friends' Sims, click on them and choose the "Echo! Echo!" option.
I Dream of Genies Part 5 Have 18 Love Tell Friends about Genie Rub Genie's Lamp
Players can collect Love from performing romantic interactions with other Sims. To tell your friends about the Genie, you'll have to post a News Feed to your Wall and have five friends click on it. Finally, visit Bella's house again, click on her Genie's Lamp and choose the correct way to run it to finish this quest. Once you do, the Desert Treasure will be yours.

Dream Zoo Helps Zynga Bump Its Daily Active Users on Mobile to 13M

Zynga had added almost 2 million new mobile daily active users in about a month according to new data that chief executive Mark Pincus shared with prospective investors ahead of next week’s expected initial public offering.

The company now has 13 million daily active users on mobile platforms, up from the 11.1 million users it was seeing on average per day through October, according to the most recent amendment of its IPO filing. Pincus revealed the numbers at an investors’ lunch a Reuters journalist attended.

In the third quarter ending in September, Zynga had 9.9 million daily active users on its mobile games, a number that was already a tenfold increase over what it had at the beginning of 2011, when its games had issues cracking the top 50 on the iOS top grossing charts. We don’t know for sure, but it’s possible that Zynga is second in daily active users only to Angry Birds developer Rovio, which last said it had 30 million daily actives. Outfit7, which says it has 70 million monthly active users, might potentially have as much or more than Zynga too.

FIFA Superstars now available on iPhone: Manage your dream team on the go

Electronic Arts has had a heck of a summer in the mobile gaming space, especially where its Facebook games are concerned. Via Playfish, both Pet Society and Restaurant City have taken the leap of faith to the mobile platform, and now FIFA Superstars has joined suit. For the low, low price of "free," you can now download FIFA Superstars from the iTunes App Store for either iPhone or iPad (note: the game can be played on iPad, but is optimized for iPhone-only).

Once you download the game, you'll be greeted with the mandatory EA Origin sign-up process. Origin is EA's attempt at a social network and digital download service, of course focusing solely on EA's titles, and if you already have an EA account, they're one in the same, allowing you to login and start playing. From there, the gameplay seems to have been ripped straight from the Facebook game, allowing you to collect cards containing players and various stats, and then build a team using the best-of-the-best. You'll then collect different equipment, implement new tactics to give your team the advantage, and can then take to the field to test your prowess.

As of right now, all of that sounds just fine, but the game itself seems to be running into some loading issues. We've tried on three devices to get the game to load, but it locks up after logging into Origin. We'd assume that these are just early-launch bugs, and that they will be cleared up shortly, but don't panic if the game doesn't work for you upon downloading it: You're (unfortunately) not alone.

Wet Dream: Steam Releases Dreamcast Pack

Oh, this is hot stuff! Couldn’t be hotter. Kieron sends words that Steam is now selling noteworthy Dreamcast titles Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure DX, Sega Bass Fishing and (here we go!) the inestimable, irrepressible Space Channel 5: Part 2 for £5.99 each, or £19.99 for the lot. Gamersgate has exactly the same deal, as it happens. Why should you be interested in taxis, fishes, Sonic the Hedgehog and… space channels? Careful, now. Those are poison thoughts you’re having. You’ll find precisely why you need each of these games after the jump.

Here’s a video of somebody really, really good playing the GameCube port of Crazy Taxi. You see what the game is here? In a sense, it’s Burnout Paradise before Burnout Paradise. You’ve got a big city, and you’re just ripping around, avoiding bystanders and learning shortcuts.

Next, a trailer for Sonic Adventure DX. Arguably the finest 3D Sonic game ever made, depending on who you’ve been talking to, what format they played the game on first and how highly they rate awesome music in a game.

Here’s a trailer for the Wii version of Sega Bass Fishing, the first ever game to seamlessly blend both bass fishing and electric guitars. The second game ever should be along any moment now. Yep.
