Microsoft Promises "Things Will Get Better" With Xbox One

The Xbox One's launch, for the most part, has been fairly stable. Save for a few hiccups and hardware glitches, there's not much to complain about... or is there?

As we mentioned last month, a group of fans put together a website called Xbox Feedbackwhich is basically a running list of complaints about the Xbox One system. The list is compiled based on consumer feedback from across the web and makes suggestions for future tweaks to the console including a controller battery indicator, less strict voice recognition, the ability to see remaining hard drive space, and much more.

At the time, Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb said that he was sharing the suggestions "with the right people," but that was about all we heard from Microsoft.

Last night, though, Hryb popped up again on Reddit and responded to a user angered over the inability to chat with friends in a party while playing a different game.

"I had a meeting today about much of this and I can say that things will get better," Hryb promised.
"I can't offer a timeline of a list of what till be addressed first, but we are aware of the issue and things will get better."

The good thing is that many of these issues can -- and hopefully will -- be addressed with future system updates. Same goes for the PS4; there's still plenty users would love to see implemented with the PlayStation 4 -- like the ability to play MP3s -- but all we can do is wait.

Microsoft Secretly Testing Halo 4 Streaming To PC And Windows Phone

Talking under the condition of anonymity, sources close to Microsoft told The Verge that the company is testing own cloud-based game streaming service.

The service is still in prototype stage and it hasn't been branded yet, but The Verge's sources have seen Halo 4 for Xbox 360 being streamed to Windows PC and Lumia 520 Windows Phone smartphone.

Sony has already publicized its plan to use Gaikai streaming service to make PlayStation 3 game available on PlayStation 4. In a recent interview, Microsoft senior director of product management and planning Albert Penello didn't rule out the possibility of an equivalent setup for Xbox One.

"There are so many things that the servers can do," he said of Microsoft's Azure cloud service. "Using our Azure cloud servers, sometimes it's things like voice processing. It could be more complicated things like rendering full games like a Gaikai and delivering it to the box. We just have to figure out how, over time, how much does that cost to deliver, how good is the experience."

Microsoft Offering Hands-On Preview of Xbox One

In a nice play to increase awareness of the Xbox One in the US, GameInformer is reporting that Microsoft's Larry Hryb will be going on a small tour to give fans a hands-on preview of the upcoming console.

There are five stops, and only four of them are pre-launch, but this will still be the only way for most people to get an up close glimpse of the Xbox One before launch.

I'm sure these things will be packed since there are no invites or tickets necessary, and will be first come first served, so get there early if you want a shot at getting a few moments of play time.

Microsoft Xbox One graphic: 'If you love games, this one's for you'

Yesterday, Microsoft released a short cinematic that advertised Xbox One as the hub for the best games. Later on in the day, Larry Hyrb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson, released a graphic from Micrsoft that boldly exclaims, "If you love games, this one's for you."

The graphic differs significantly from the video that was released earlier in the day. Whereas the video used mostly third-party games to promote the next-generation Xbox, the graphic focuses in on first-party titles and exclusive content from third-party games, along with a slew of awards earned at this year's E3 in Los Angeles.

Microsoft: 'The best games are on Xbox One

Apparently, the best games are on Xbox One. This is according to Microsoft who posted a video highlighting all the exclusive blockbusters that will be available on its next-gen system when it releases later this year -- in November for those who are counting down.

Ya know, there's just one problem. The majority of the games shown here aren't exclusive to the Xbox One. Last time I checked, FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag are all multiplatform games. Heck, Ubisoft has even created exclusive content for the PlayStation versions of Watch Dogs and Black Flag.

To be fair, there are a few exclusives included in the video. Forza Motorsport 5, Killer Instinct, and Ryse: Son of Rome are all exclusive to the Xbox One. But where is Sunset Overdrive? Lococycle?Fantasia: Music Evolved? I guess it helps that downloadable content for CoD: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 will release first on Xbox One -- maybe that's what makes it the optimal platform?

Microsoft: 'No plans to release Halo on Steam'

In response to the recent speculation that Halo: CE, Halo 2, and Halo 3 will be playable on Steam, which stemmed from a leaked listed of games on the Steam database, Microsoft has confirmed the publisher has no plans to release any of the games on Valve's platform.

Responding to our inquiry, a Microsoft spokesperson gave us the typical, "We currently do not have plans to release any 'Halo' titles on Steam."

With that being said, it's worth noting the spokesperson didn't say PC, just Steam. It's still possible we could see the release of Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3 on PC via Games for Windows LIVE marketplace or the Xbox LIVE Marketplace exclusively for Windows 8.

Let's remember, Halo games weren't the only ones mentioned. The list also mentioned Fez, The Witness, Quantum Conundrum 2, Gunpoint, Owlboy, Lococycle, and Dyad. And there was some validity to the list as Dyad creator Shawn McGrath revealed the PSN shooter would, in fact, be making the leap to Steam.

Draw Something, birthdays, Formspring, Microsoft, more on this week’s top 20 growing Facebook apps by DAU

The game Draw Something topped our list of growing Facebook applications by daily active users this week. There were also a pair of apps by Microsoft, some birthday apps, Timeline apps and more.

The titles below grew between 230,000 and 6 million DAU, based on AppData, our data tracking service covering growth for apps on Facebook.

Top Gainers This Week

As mentioned, Draw Something by OMGPOP topped our list of apps growing by DAU, with more than 6 million alone during the past week. Every other game paled in comparison to that growth. Then there were two types of birthday apps. American Greetings’ Birthday Calendar, which creates a calendar interface allowing users to select friends to whom to send e-cards and the MiCalendario – Cumpleaños or MyCalendar – Birthdays variety, which auto-selects all of a user’s friends for app requests.

Timeline apps on our list included Spotify, with a whopping 6.5 million DAU, and a good amount of growth in the United Kingdom. Formspring is back with its Timeline app and BranchOut has added a button allowing users to invite all their professional friends to the app with just one click.

Microsoft made the list twice, with its Bing app and Microsoft Live app, which asks users to consolidate their Facebook profile with their Windows Live profile. Other apps of note included Pandora, Yahoo and Family Tree,  a genealogy app that works better the more people you invite to use it.

Microsoft puts Bing search ad on Facebook logout page

Microsoft is the first advertiser to use the new Facebook logout page placement with a unit that includes search capabilities, TechCrunch confirms.

Last week the social network surprised advertisers with a new ad type several times larger than any it had previously offered. The ad, which is shown after a user logs out of Facebook, seems to be a smart compromise, giving brands the prominence they’re looking for without sacrificing user experience. Not only does the unit appear when a user’s session is complete, Facebook’s most active users rarely log out and therefore won’t see many ads like this.

The Microsoft ad includes a unique interactive capability: users can type a query into a Bing search bar and results open in a new window or tab. Facebook did not make it clear when it announced the new ad type how much customization would be allowed. The logout ad is only available for “premium” advertisers working directly with Facebook, so we could see more custom elements like the Bing search. Otherwise, the unit’s size makes it ideal for promoting videos.

It’s fitting that Microsoft would be Facebook’s first logout page advertiser. Microsoft, an early investor in the social network, sold banner ads on the site from 2007 to 2010. Since then, Facebook has managed all of its own display advertising. The company, however, still uses Bing for search, translation and map features. Microsoft integrates Facebook social data into Bing, Outlook and other mail and chat clients.

Microsoft was also one of the first advertisers to advertise within News Feed before Facebook took away that option. Companies can once again get ads in users’ streams, but now users must be connected to the company’s page or have a friend who took an action on the page. This was not the case in 2007 when Microsoft ran ads for Windows Live Messenger directly in the feed.

Arkadium signs social game publishing deal with Microsoft Studios

Social and casual game developer Arkadium announced a multi-year publishing partnership with Microsoft Studios today that will help the developer accelerate its cross-platform game development.

Though few details were available on the agreement, we assume that it applies to Microsoft’s Bing, MSN Messenger and Zone.com games portal where Arkadium games already appear. Beyond that, it is likely that Microsoft Studios would publish the games on Xbox Live Arcade or Windows Phone 7. It is unclear if the publishing deal extends to Facebook, where Arkadium currently enjoys 1 million monthly active users and over 200,000 daily active users as recorded by our AppData traffic tracking service.

Statements included in the press releases from Microsoft Studios’ Matt Booty, general manager of connected experiences, suggest that Microsoft is looking to expand its publishing beyond its web services, console and phone. Assuming the tech giant isn’t attempting to launch a social network of its own to compete with Facebook and Google+, we could perhaps expect to see Microsoft Studios-published games on these platforms. Already, Microsoft has begun to soften its stance on publishing for rival platforms, recently bringing a version of its Xbox 360 game Kinectimals to iOS.

“Arkadium has a ten-year track record of developing entertaining and well-architected casual and social games,” Booty’s statement reads. “Our team is excited to be partnering with a developer that we believe will help us entertain millions of people as we expand our reach to a broader audience.”

Microsoft Studios gets social games savvy, buddies up with Arkadium

The studio that now brings you Halo and the Forza Motorsport racing series for the Xbox 360 just got down with the Facebook. Microsoft Studios announced a strategic partnership with Arkadium for the latter to create cross-platform social games to be launched by the former. According to Arkadium, this multi-year partnership is an evolution of the duo's existing relationship.

"We are very excited to be working with Microsoft Studios to develop casual and social cross-platform experiences," Arkadium CEO Kenny Rosenblatt said in a release. "We have been looking to strategically partner with a company that can help catapult our business and accelerate Arkadium's cross platform game development. Microsoft is the perfect partner to help us realize our growth strategy."

However, what's unclear is just how this partnership will work out. Microsoft Studios acts as both a developer and a publisher to its existing game franchises, namely Halo, which is developed by 343 Industries (formerly Bungie). Is that how the studio will interact with New York-based Arkadium, best known for its Mahjongg Dimensions series on Facebook?

"Arkadium has a ten-year track record of developing entertaining and well-architected casual and social games," GM of Connected Experiences for Microsoft Studios Matt Booty said. "Our team is excited to be partnering with a developer that we believe will help us entertain millions of people as we expand our reach to a broader audience."

Well, that doesn't leave with much more answered. Arkadium has partnered with numerous organizations to increase the reach of its social games, most recently The Los Angeles Times and CNN. This, however, seems as if Microsoft Studios will simply provide Arkadium with more resources to create the game they're already making (and perhaps on new platforms?). Your guess is as good as ours, but we've contacted Arkadium for comment.

This week, predictably, given the holiday season greeting card applications were popular on our list of the fastest growing by daily active users. Other popular apps included horoscopes, Spotify,  a few social networks within Facebook, Social Statistics, Family Tree and a few more.

The titles below grew from between 180,000 and 7.3 million DAU, based on AppData, our data tracking service covering growth for apps on Facebook.

Top Gainers This Week

Topping our list this week, Daily Horoscope with 7. 3 million DAU and a similar version, ????????????? ???????, with 800,000 DAU. These apps often ask users to post daily to their Walls. Spotify grew by 1.8 million DAU, while Samsung Mobile grew by 1 million DAU.  The aforementioned social networks on our list this week included: Nimbuzz Mobile   app for mobile devices with 870,000 DAU, Onedate dating app with 530,000 DAU  and dating app Niik with 280,000 DAU.

Assorted apps on our list included Social Statistics, which publishes a list of top friends to the feed, and grew by 740,000 DAU. Then there was a sophisticated video app, SmoothTV, with 678,000 DAU. Genealogy app Family Tree grew by 360,000 DAU. Finally, Microsoft Live grew by 300,000 DAU.

The rest of the list included the aforementioned greeting card applications which principally worked by asking users to send cards to their friends. Greeting Cards Grew by 480,000 DAU, Greeting Cards grew by 230,000 DAU, Cards grew by 220,000 DAU, Greetings grew by 210,000 DAU and Greeting Cards grew by 180,000 DAU.

Birthday calendars, friend quizzes, greeting cards, Microsoft, Bing, Spotify, Pandora, iPad and photo apps made up our list of applications growing by daily active users this week. The titles below grew from between 210,000 and 3.6 million DAU, based on AppData, our data tracking service covering growth for apps on Facebook.

Top Gainers This Week

Birthday calendars topped our list this week. MyCalendar – Birthdays grew by 3.6 million DAU, Birthday Calendar grew by 3 million DAU, ???? – ?? by 1.2 million DAU and MiCalendario – Cumpleaños by 640,000 DAU. These apps require users to invite friends before use, and may secure growth that way.

Then a pair of quiz apps made the list, in Spanish and Portuguese. 21 Preguntas which grew by 810,000 DAU and 21 Perguntas with 430,00 DAU. These types of apps usually ask users to answer questions about friends, then publish feed stories with answers.

The middle of the list was made up of a mixed bag of apps. Bing’s app grew by 600,000 MAU, Yahoo grew by 560,000 DAU, Pandora by 500,000 DAU, Spotify by 500,000 DAU and MyPad for iPad by 400,000 DAU. The photo sharing app, Mis Fotos, grew by 350,000 DAU; the app generates feed stories when users interact with friends’ photos. Then Microsoft Live grew by 300,000 DAU; the app is a Windows Messenger integration.

The end of the list was taken up by four different apps that are the same thing. Greeting Cards grew by 240,000 DAU, Greetings by 240,000 DAU, Greeting Cards by 220,000 DAU and Greeting Cards by 210,000 DAU. The app is a Connect integration to myfriendsgreetings.com showing friends with upcoming birthdays, and allowing users to select from different types of cards, ex: Christmas, New Year, Kwanzaa, etc.

Facebook has more gamers than Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo combined?

Facebook games are big, but they might not be that huge just yet. At the company's London edition of the F8 conference, Facebook director of partnerships Ethan Beard said that it has more gamers than Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft combined, TechRadar reports. We're not exactly certain what measure Beard was referring to, because our math adds up a bit differently.

"Social design inside social gaming has driven fantastic growth," Beard told F8 conference-goers. "It's revolutionising gaming. We have over 200 million social gamers on Facebook every month; that's more Facebook gamers than the Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo combined."

But after looking at the number of units sold by each company, compared to Facebook's reported 200 million monthly players, we're not 100 percent on board with that call. Nintendo has shipped over 87 million Wii units and over 147 million Nintendo DS systems to date, as of June 30. And Microsoft has sold over 57 million Xbox 360 consoles as of Sept. 30, while Sony sold nearly 52 million PlayStation 3 rigs as of July 31.

Social games have no doubt garnered more players in such a short amount of time than any gaming platform to date. But, if you look at the amount of consoles shipped and sold by all three major manufacturers, Beard's claim appears to fall a bit short. That is, unless Beard is talking online gamers. Then Facebook just might have the big three beat, to which Beard said, "These aren't games with friends sprinkled on top; it's more about social interactions with gaming on top."

Zynga Seattle to open just minutes from PopCap, Nintendo, Microsoft

Zynga knows where the game's at. KING5 news reports that Zynga is running recruitment phases for its studio in Seattle's Pioneer Square. The building is still under construction, but the video above gives a tiny glimpse of what a Zynga studio looks like. Considering how close the FarmVille creator now is to three of the biggest players in the industry, this could be the company's most strategic studio opening yet.

Zynga Seattle is just less than 10 minutes from PopCap Games of Bejeweled Blitz stardom and just a 25 minute drive from both Nintendo of America and Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash. According to KING5, Zynga plans to hire 50 more employees to fill this new studio, which reportedly is located in one of the shadier parts of the city. The company joins a number of game developers that comprise one third of the businesses in the area, so it's safe to say that the tech and games industries are booming there.

But what's more important is its proximity to these big league gaming companies. It's safe to say that at nearly $10 billion valuation, CEO Mark Pincus is ready to talk with Nintendo and Microsoft Xbox executives. While Zynga is doubtful of Xbox Live's ability to provide a home for FarmVille, there's always Windows Phone 7 and Nintendo 3DS. Not to mention that PopCap is about to go public--maybe the two could ... work something out?
