Street Fighter will blow your mind once again with its recently released hardcover graphic novel series by UDON Entertainment. Super Street Fighter Volume 1: New Generation is printed in art-book size - 8.25 by 11.75 inches - and you've gotta see it to believe how clear the quality of the art has become for the largest-size novel yet from UDON. Can someone say "perfect"?
Also included is a sketch gallery, allowing fans to peek at rare and never-before-seen character artwork. Ah, the Akuma art... beauty.
Now, let's "Focus Attack" our way through. The graphic novel incorporates the stories and match-ups from Street Fighter IV - but insiders know these events were actually between SFII and SFIII.
The prologue starts out with a secret society and its lord, Gill, who's praised for his power to conquer death. From there, the real adventure begins. Col. Guile learns about a secret society, which leads him to Japan to find Ryu. Having no contact with an agent, he sent for more intel. Guile reminisces about his last visit to Japan when he searched for the infamous M. Bison and the past tournament along with the fighters he has faced. From here, is where the story gets wild.
Not once during my read was I lost on the characters' stories and how they are intertwined.
The impressive attention to detail will have you immersed into their world and wanting more. UDON and the artists make this read visually stunning. Their style is nothing like the typical Japanese animation one may recognize. This is smooth. Not "cartoon" smooth, but something you may see in cut scenes from actual video games but better than cell-shaded images.
This Bonus Stage is absolutely hilarious!
As I read, I've noticed that the writers added a few enjoyable - and some hysterical -mini stories to keep you intrigued, cleverly titled "Bonus Stages." One in particular is a match-up between the Japanese sumo E. Honda and the oiled Turkish wrestler Hakan. Seeing Hakan pull off his ultra move "The Oil Coaster" on big ol' Honda had me howlin'. The Bonus Stages are truly a worthy effort from UDON that cannot be overlooked.
The fights? Epic. The storyline? Amazing. The UDON crew has really nailed the spirit of Street Fighter. I have been a Street Fighter fan since Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, and I can proudly say this will make you smile from ear to ear. And just let me say this (and no spoilers here): Sakura and Dudley are BADASSES! And if you've ever wondered why Juri, the sexy tae kwon do vixen, has a yin and yang as her left eye, be excited to know that you will learn the brutal truth. You will also find cameos that will make you chuckle - Thrasher? From Final Fight?? Now that is awesome. 
Needless to say, I can go on and on, but you need to pick this up. It is worth the read and will want you begging for a "Run Back." Be salty no more my friends; UDON has got your back!

Image via iDream InteractiveSlot Universe developer iDream Interactive has joined the match-three puzzle genre on Facebook with the release of Super Gem Heroes. The game stars a young boy named Gem Boy, on a mission to retrieve his stolen toys from the evil Boogeyman. Players are joined by a superhero named Ruby-loo, who guides Gem Boy through each level, offering helpful tips along the way.
Super Gem Heroes is incredibly similar to the most popular match-three puzzle games on Facebook, including King’s Candy Crush Saga and Pet Heroes Saga. Each level in Super Gem Heroes asks players to earn a specific number of points, with most coming with a limited number of moves. Some levels may have secondary tasks, like clearing all of the “Boogey-Goo” from the board or earning as many points as possible in a limited amount of time, rather than moves.
Failing to complete a level’s goals results in the loss of a life, but lives recharge over time for continued play. They can also be purchased with real money or sent between friends for free.
Making matches of four or more like-colored symbols results in power-up squares, like those that clear whole rows or columns of gems at the same time. Additional power-ups can be activated manually, clearing one specific gem from the board, clearing a whole row, or every gem of a single color, as examples. A few of these items are earned for free, but more can be purchased with premium currency, and eventually real money.
Super Gem Heroes is undergoing a period of new growth on Facebook. The game has doubled in size over the last seven days, now sitting at just under 100,000 monthly active users, according to AppData, our tracking service for mobile and social apps and developers. The game has gained 45,000 users in the last seven days alone. Super Gem Heroes is now available to play for free on Facebook.

Nintendo showed off some brief gameplay footage of the blue blur in action, but didn't really reveal detail specific movesets. Iwata teased that he was anxious to see what Sonic's speed will add to the gameplay.

We mean that both literally and figuratively. To celebrate a whopping 300 billion coins collected by New Super Mario Bros. 2 players worldwide, Nintendo has released a new series of downloadable levels that are free for a limited time. Before Feb. 1, players can romp around in tributes to classic levels from the Super Mario series, like the first stages of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3 and more. In a Nintendo Direct broadcast (shown below), Nintendo president Satoru Iwata described the Gold Classics Pack of levels in detail, which will be available for $2.50 after Feb. 1. The Gold Classics Pack will feature a series of levels that sew parts of retro Super Mario Bros. levels together, culminating in a fight against Bowser that pays homage to his first encounter with Mario.
Between this and initiatives like Miiverse on the Wii U, perhaps Nintendo is finally coming around to modern, online gaming. But we'll call that for certain when we see it. Look, it's our job to be jaded cautiously optimistic.

Otherwise, it's just another Super Mario game. That's not necessarily a bad thing for fans of the man in red, but those hoping for a mind-blowing Mario experience with the launch of Wii U will probably be disappointed. New Super Mario Bros. U, touted here on the E3 2012 show floor, is much of the same that players gobbled up on the original Wii. That said, its charms settle in as soon as a friend picks up the Wii U game pad, the tablet-style controller that comes with the machine. While four folks play as Mario, Luigi or one of two Toads simply romp around the world using the standard Wii remote, a fifth player can join in using the new game pad. Focusing on its six-inch screen, the fifth wheel taps the screen to cause floating blocks to appear in his friends' world. 
With the ability to place four blocks at once nearly anywhere, any time, the game pad player holds quite a bit of power in his hands--the power to either help or hinder his friends' progress. Want to help your friends reach a giant golden coin way up high? Then build a floating stairway for your buddies. Want to be a little nuisance? Place a block above a player just as he jumps to reach that platform, sending her plummeting to her adorable death.
It's blast to wield that kind of power, but that's about the extent of your abilities: tapping the screen to create blocks. (Though, it's possible to create blocks in quick succession, creating a bridge of sorts for players to stroll across each world completely devoid of danger. But what's the fun in that?) Without much else to do as the fifth wheel, this charm fades quickly. Maybe a visible character for the fifth player to control would help with that. 
Regardless, the charm of Mario's world is ever-present, even more so this time around with lush backgrounds and foregrounds, and two new tricks up the plumbers' sleeve: a flying squirrel suit. (Does it official name really matter?) With this, players can glide across levels and shake the Wii remote to soar up high with a burst of speed. The second is a baby Yoshi that can inflate itself to lift players up high in the sky, much like the propeller suit in the game previous.
There's no doubt that running and leaping around the Mushroom Kingdom will be a blast (and sell like hotcakes) as always when New Super Mario Bros. U launches this fall. And tapping around on the Wii U game pad--interacting with the same world your friends are in--is impressive. Unfortunately, the method isn't the game-changing experience you'd expect from Nintendo's flagship Mario game on its brand new platform. Perhaps that lies in the nifty social layer shown off this morning. Now wouldn't that be something.

Look, we both know that Super Mario is kind of a big deal. When a new game featuring the plumber in red and blue leaps into release, it almost always sets the standard for whatever Nintendo machine it lands on to much fanfare. But we had no idea that said fanfare could ever surpass "Nintendo 64 Kid" levels. That is, until Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS arrived. To honor Mario's long-awaited entrance into the third dimension, Nintendo transformed a part of Times Square in New York City into a real-life chunk of the Mushroom Kingdom. And the results are entertaining, to say the least. Between trained stunt artists leaping around like Mario and a dude dressed up like a raccoon tanooki, dude knows how to draw a crowd. Well, at least a crowd of super Super Mario fans. Who knows, this just may be what the 3DS needs.
Seriously, you will lose serious life minutes to this game. It's called Super Crayon, and its super simple yet potentially gripping play mechanics could keep you coming back for more. Developed by Barcelona-based Social Point, Super Crayon isn't the deepest social game around, but it offers what ultimately all social gamers are looking for, a distraction from work, stress, what have you. And how could you feel stressed when piloting that adorable little pencil?Grab a wing and you'll gain super speed, but inversely stopwatches freeze your enemies. Gobble up a star to get the ability to eat the baddies--just like in Pac-Man. The game takes plenty of inspiration from other games (clearly), but these tropes aren't necessarily new much less the picture puzzle sub genre. The final, probably most important example is the fact that you only have a few lives per run, as if this were an old arcade game.
It's not a coincidence that some folks in the industry have alluded Facebook games to arcade machines. Players can purchase Gold or earn it through playing the game to buy more lives. And this is where Super Crayon's (terribly light) social features come in. As an alternative to Gold, you can ask friends to provide you with lives as well. To support friendly competition, Super Crayon automatically creates leader boards between friends, and provides a global leader board to really put things into perspective. Until Zynga decides to change things, remember that you can only receive a single Festival Pass from each of your individual Cafe World neighbors or Facebook friends. Your mileage may vary.

As for the Passes, I suppose the only consolation here is that you don't have to start from zero passes for each of these goals. That being the case, this final goal will only technically require you to earn five more passes, but by this point, that's probably far easier said than done.
Once you complete this entire goal series, you'll earn 500 free Festival Passes (contest entries) into Zynga's Super Summer Food Fest contest, and you'll also be able to watch a fireworks show as a celebration for your success. Is all of this hard work worth it? With new recipes to unlock, I suppose you could just complete enough goals to unlock these new dishes, but I know many completionists out there aren't going to like the idea of leaving something unfinished. With a lot of hard work, and a bit of patience, I'm sure we can all power through this together. Or, at least, I hope we can...

Hero City is a Facebook game from developer Paprika Lab that soft-launched on the platform toward the end of April. Thought it hasn’t yet had a big marketing push, Hero City saw enough organic growth to come in at number one on our list of emerging Facebook games last week.
According to our traffic tracking service, AppData, Hero City currently has 767,405 monthly active users and 89,571 daily active users.
Hero City combines city-building gameplay and adds a layer of superhero camp on top. Players build and upgrade structures to improve the city and then collect superheroes to come live in their city. More superheroes means more advantages when undertaking the game’s quests, and will also give players the upper hand in player-vs-player gameplay, which the developer tells us is due to be added to the game soon.
Paprika Lab CEO John Kim believes that the superheroes give the game a unique spin over other city-building titles on Facebook. “As developers, we’ve grown up watching superhero comic books and movies where superheroes save the city and the world from villains,” he says. “So it seemed pretty natural to combine the superhero and city concepts together.”
The game is currently monetized through the purchase of “instant finish” items to complete buildings quicker, the purchase of in-game standard currency and resources, special buildings and superheroes. Facebook Credits are used as the game’s sole premium currency. The developer has experimented with using its own proprietary hard currency in its previous game Pirate Legacy, and Kim notes that there are “pros and cons to adopting each system.”
“We’ll be rolling out new features around superheroes where some new monetization features might come in,” he adds. “But as mentioned [previously], we don’t want to hurt the user experience by bombarding users with overwhelming monetization features.”
The developer is planning on expanding the game in a number of different ways. Besides simply adding more content in the form of more buildings, decorations and superheroes, Kim says that the game will also be incorporating battles with supervillains, as well as the ability to challenge other players’ heroes in player-vs-player gameplay.
Hero City is not Paprika Lab’s only project, but Kim hopes that it will help the developer form a distinctive brand for Paprika to trade on with future and other existing games. “Our focus is not only to merely make new games, but also to have some sort of a unique taste and style of experience where users will know that this game is made by Paprika Lab,” he says. “We think we haven’t reached that point yet, but basically, we want to create a Paprika Lab brand gaming experience, such as you’d find from Blizzard, Square Enix and id Software games.”
Hero City has enjoyed steady growth since its late April launch, with slightly larger jumps in MAU occurring at the start of the week for the last two weeks. At its current rate of growth, the game will pass a million monthly active users within a week.

New to our list this week is the just-launched Alpang Puzzle and Nickelodeon’s AddictingGames portal site, which we took a quick look at earlier this week when it popped on our list of fastest-growing Facebook games by daily active users. Also new is an unofficial Java version of classic Nintendo Entertainment System game, Super Mario Bros. 3. We’ve been unable to successfully open this Facebook app on Firefox as it causes the browser to crash.
Super Mario Bros. 3 isn’t the first unofficial Nintendo entry we’ve seen on Facebook. The last time we encountered a Mario game, however, it was apparently converted to another game with a less litigious intellectual property owner. Other Super Mario Facebook games have since taken up resident on Facebook, with the largest clocking it at just 160,000 MAU behind Super Mario Bros. 3.
Farther down our list, we see both Enrique Iglesias, Play With It! and Farkle Pro, which we reviewed recently. We also see Spartacus: The Game, which got a boost in traffic from a series of international releases for both the Facebook game and its Starz TV show tie-in. In the coming week, we’ll examine the newly-launched Doomsday Defense from IGG Inc.
